Run to LIVE!
For some, running is
life, passion, motivation, therapy or test. But for me running proved to be a teacher!
It taught me a lesson which I had failed to comprehend in my life, earlier. My maiden half marathon was indeed an eye
opening experience. It not only helped me reflect on myself, but also helped me
explore some important things in life, that we tend to ignore. A test of
endurance persistent and self, running has more to it. Long distance running, I
can easily say resembles ‘life’- which we live. The start of the race would
reflect the birth and the younger years of a human, depicting energy and
impatience, with throbbing urge to run past everyone and reach the goal, lest
realising that the journey is long and one needs to show patience and
consistency. The youth depicts the middle of the race, where your body heats up
and adjusts to the run. You ignore the little signs of wear and tear, and push
yourself to keep pace with the run. Ignoring the aches in your body-
aggravating with every step you run to come closer to your goal.
However as you approach
the goal; you know that your body is tired and ‘old’. All you do is keep running
towards your goal. Your mind is numb, it is just the determination and the
attitude, you possess, which helps you fight the very urge to stop and let your
pain conquer your exhausted body. Right from the birth till the end of the race
your attitude and actions count. It is not about living your life, but it is
more about how you lived your life. Similarly, it is not about the end of the
race, but the journey and experience of running a long race.
In life, you are
exempted from isolations and you live in close proximity with your family and
friends. The quality of partnership in life influences the way you live. Your
partners and friends, at times, determine you and your life. Likewise, my long
distance running helped me understand the value of someone being by your side,
helping you in your struggles. If your partner’s pace matches yours and both
make an effort to be at each other’s side, you can help each other sail through
a difficult test. A marathon not only tests your endurance, but also mental
balance, attitude and strength. I thank one such person who ran besides me
throughout the race and helped me deal with my fears and self doubt, gracefully.
Though in the end I lost my partner near the finish line, but I can never
forget the support he gave me. The race helped me understand how one needs to
lead one’s life. Running is not just about determination, reliance, growing,
miles, persistence, winning... it is also about patience and partnerships. Where
knowingly-unknowingly you help each other to conquer the hard battles and celebrate
each milestone that you cross, pulling others and cheering them.
Running is not just
about health, running is about living your life!
